What the NAACP said about Song of the South

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People recognizes in Song of the South remarkable artistic merit in the music and in the combination of living actors and the cartoon technique. It regrets, however, that in an effort neither to offend audiences in the north or south, the production helps to perpetuate a dangerously glorified picture of slavery. Making use of the beautiful Uncle Remus folklore, Song of the South unfortunately gives the impression of an idyllic master-slave relationship which is a distortion of the facts."
Walter Francis White, Executive Secretary, NAACP 1946

Coal Black Cartoon

If you are looking for the controversial "Coal Black and the Sebben Dwarfs" cartoon we do offer it on a separate DVD. This is not a Disney produced cartoon and features strong stereotypes that were somehow still acceptable in the 1940s. We do not endorse this product and urge you not to show it to impressionable children. This is why we don't include it on our Song of the South DVD. If you would like a copy of this cartoon enter "Coal Black" in the special code field on the check and money order form. If you pay by other means (ie: Cash App) just include "Coal Black" in the email you send with your shipping information.

What Others Are Saying

  • I Love This Movie

"Thank you! I love this movie. I did as you suggested and set my DVD player to Widescreen. We watch it on a 7 foot projection screen and it looks fantastic. Just like a modern movie. My kids love it. They especially love the cartoon sequences.  Jerry
  • Best I've Ever Seen

"My Song of the South arrived today and I have to tell you I have never seen anything like it! I used to be a projectionist in NJ and it looks like a theatrical Technicolor print with gorgeous sound. I have a previous DVD that I thought was good and I  have seen the Japanese Laser disc, but this beats everything hands down. You are to be congratulated." Robert
  • It's Just As You Described

"Thank you so much. It is just as you described. I so enjoyed watching it again. It brought back many good memories. Nobody agrees with slavery anymore and Uncle Remus is a wonderful example of a loving person in a time of hardship." Miguel
  • Beautiful DVD

"This looks so good considering it was made in 1946. Our family watched it together and had a great time doing so. Thanks for this great little treasure. Everyone should see this." Cindy
